Effective Physical Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Chiropractic is effective fo pain in adolescents and childrenHere at Park View Acupuncture and Chiropractic Clinic we often get asked to ‘just have look at my son/daughter/grandchild as he/she complains of back pain but surely that can not be right, can it?’

There is a surprisingly high number of children and adolescents suffering from lower back pain. Studies show anywhere from 9% right up to 69% with 12-18 year olds as the most likely sufferers. Youngsters suffering back pain are, probably not surprisingly, also far more likely to suffer as adults. We know what treatments are likely to work for adults but few studies have been done for the younger population

Manual therapy combined with physical therapeutic conditioning (PTC) have come up trumps in a recent study reviewing the evidence for effective treatment methods for adolescents with lower back pain. PTC is just a posh term covering walking, running, cycling and swimming.

Well, as you can see it can be right when your child complains of back pain and there are many factors, which can cause the discomfort to start. Life-style, physical activity and injuries, school-related factors such as heavy bags and wrong sized furniture. and of course psycho-social factors including home environment, personal relationships with peers and teachers, bullying etc.

As chiropractors acupuncturists and sports injury therapists our main treatment emphasis is physical, lifestyle and school-related factors but we often pick up some psycho-social factors. Strictly speaking this isn't ‘our bag’ but identifying these problems often open up other avenues of help, support and treatment through the school or the child’s GP.

So, do not dismiss your child’s back pain as ‘nonsense’. If it keeps coming back or if it simply does not go away then get it investigated and dealt with - it will help them immensely in dealing with life now and the life that lies ahead of them.

We are available Monday to Friday 9am until 7pm.
