American HMO makes chiropractic mandatory before they will consider surgery.

We have heard it all now!!

An American Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) recently issued guideline to the effect that conservative care including chiropractic is mandatory before considering spinal surgery for chronic lower back pain.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre Health Plan, which is associated with the university’s school of medicine now requires referral to a spinal surgical specialist only if no improvement is noted after three months of the onset AND after completing a course of chiropractic treatment and conservative care, such as physical therapy and medication.

This is very encouraging for the chiropractic profession and maybe, just maybe, someone in the UK health service will take note.

Back pain has always been the focus of the chiropractic profession but many other conditions affecting the body’s various joints, muscles and nerves can also be successfully treated.
